The North American Summer Esperanto Institute has Moved East!

Ellen M. Eddy

After thirty two years of annual summer sessions in San Francisco, the North American Summer Esperanto Institute – also know by its Esperanto name, Nord-Amerika Somera Kursaro (NASK) – is holding its 2002 sessions on the East Coast. Forced from its traditional home at the San Francisco State University last year when SFSU decided to expand its own summer programs, the NASEI held a two week program at the University of San Francisco in 2001 (for details, see the 2001 ESF Annual Report). This year, however, NASEI is able to return to its traditional three-week format thanks to the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, which is hosting the Institute between the 8th and 26th of July.

As usual, four intensive courses in Esperanto (Beginning Esperanto, Intermediate Esperanto I & II, and Advanced Esperanto) are being held concurrently at NASEI, with instruction given by three internationally known experts: this year, they are Ilona Koutny (Hungary/Poland), Alexander Melnikov (Russia) and Roberto Resende (Brazil).

Postgraduate study in Interlinguistics at Adam Mickiewicz University (Poznań, PL)

Ilona Koutny

The Linguistics Institute of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the second largest university of Poland, is now accepting candidates for a three-year graduate study program in Interlinguistics. The program is lead by Dr. Ilona Koutny, a member of the Esperanto Academy, with guest lectures given by such distinguished Esperantologists as John Wells (London, GB), Humphrey Tonkin (Hartford, US) and Michel Duc Goninaz (Aix-en-Provence, FR), Vera Barandovská-Frank (Paderborn, DE), Detlev Blanke (Berlin, DE), Zbigniew Galor (Poznan, PL), Katalin Kovats-Smideliusz (Debrecen, HU), Blazio Vaha (Budapest, HU), and István Ertl (Rotterdam, NL) as well as the poet Lidia Ligęza (Krakow, PL).

The Interlinguistic Studies program provides an overview of general and applied linguistics, with a focus on international and intercultural communication. Various planned languages are examined, with particular attention being paid to the grammar, literature, culture and history of Esperanto. In the third year of study, students may specialize in communication, linguistics, literature, interlinguistics or language pedagogy. Special attention to teacher training is paid in the final session of the program.

Students are expected to attend a one-week session in Poznań once each semester, at the end of September and the beginning of February. They are required to prepare a thesis and pass a final exam, after which they receive a diploma in Interlinguistic Studies. The first students of the program, from the Czech Republic, Germany, Macedonia, USA, and Poland, will receive their diplomas this year.

Potential students from anywhere in the world may register for the academic year 2002/2003 until August 15, 2002. Required are completion of a secondary school program, with final exam or equivalent, and a good knowledge of Esperanto. Participants may take an evaluative test before the beginning of their first study session in Poznań. Program fees per semester: € 400 (for countries with transfer problems approx. € 120). Some scholarships are available.
